Mudrooms are one of those spaces that often go unnoticed until you realize how essential they are—especially in the Midwest, where winters can bring snow, slush, and a lot of gear to store. Whether it’s a spot to drop coats and boots or a space for backpacks and school items, your mudroom serves as the gateway to keeping the rest of your home organized and clean. Recently, we completed a mudroom remodel that not only enhanced the functionality but also brought in the custom character our clients were craving. Let’s get into how we transformed this space and why you might want to consider giving your mudroom the attention it deserves!

The Before: Builder-Grade LVT Flooring and Blended Hardware
Our clients’ mudroom had builder-grade materials, including LVT flooring, which stands for luxury vinyl tile. While LVT is a durable and affordable flooring option, it often lacks the warmth and texture that natural materials bring. In this case, our clients felt that the previous flooring wasn’t adding any personality or character to their home, especially compared to the updates they had made/were making in other areas. On top of that, the black cabinet hardware felt hidden, and they wanted something that would pop.

The Transformation: Herringbone Tile and Gold Hardware
Our goal was to bring in more personality and warmth without sacrificing the durability that a hardworking space like a mudroom needs. Here’s how we did it:
Replacing LVT with Brick-Looking Tile: The first step was to remove the LVT flooring and replace it with this neutral-toned, brick-looking tile. This tile not only brings a timeless aesthetic, but the brick element also adds texture and interest to the space. We chose to lay the tile in a herringbone pattern, which instantly elevates the look and makes the mudroom feel more custom. The durability of the tile ensures it can handle all the wet boots and muddy shoes, while the herringbone design adds a touch of sophistication.
Upgrading the Hardware: To tie the look together, we swapped out the basic black hardware for gold pulls. This small change makes a huge impact, giving the room a modern, polished feel that complements the rest of the home’s updates. Gold hardware is a great way to add warmth and elegance to a space, making it feel cohesive and intentional.

Practical Ways to Maximize Your Current Space Or to Think About For Your Next Remodel:
1. Add Durable, Easy-to-Clean Flooring: Mudrooms are prone to dirt, water, and mud, especially in winter. Flooring options like tile, vinyl, or sealed brick herringbone (a popular look!) make it easier to clean and maintain.
2. Install Hooks and Open Shelving: Instead of using bulky furniture, keep things accessible and save space with hooks for coats and bags and open shelves for shoes or bins. It’s perfect for grab-and-go storage.
3. Use Built-In Benches with Storage: A bench adds convenience for putting on boots, while the storage underneath is perfect for gloves, hats, and scarves.
4. Incorporate a Charging Station: Adding an outlet or two with USB ports near a small shelf can keep devices charged and ready as you head out.
5. Create Zones for Each Family Member: Especially if you have kids, creating a designated space with cubbies or hooks for each person helps keep everything organized.
6. Include Seasonal Storage: Use bins or baskets to store seasonal items (like sunscreen in summer or hats & gloves in winter) so you can quickly swap them out as the weather changes.
Why You Shouldn’t Overlook Your Mudroom
While mudrooms are a necessity in Midwest homes, especially during the harsh winters, they often get overlooked during remodels. However, this space plays a crucial role in keeping your home organized and functional all year round. From serving as a drop zone for coats and boots in the winter to housing backpacks, sports gear, and daily essentials, a well-designed mudroom can make life easier and your home more efficient.
Our latest project is proof that even small changes, like upgrading your flooring or hardware, can transform a mudroom into a stylish, functional space. Whether it’s installing durable, character-rich materials like herringbone tile or adding custom touches with hardware, investing in this often-forgotten area can boost the aesthetic and practicality of your home. If your mudroom feels outdated or isn’t working as hard as it could, a refresh might be just what you need!
