This is a trend we are big fans of in our remodeling projects and used most recently in our Bittern project’s basement bath. Mixing metals anywhere in the home, especially in a bathroom, is such a fun way to add some flair and personality to your space. It's all about finding that perfect balance between creativity and style. While you can get away with mixing a few finishes in a space, there’s definitely a little science to it. Here are some guidelines we like to follow when mixing metals to help nail the look without going overboard:
1. Limit the Number of Metals
While variety can add charm, too many different metals can create a chaotic appearance. Aim to mix just two or three metals in your bathroom. This approach ensures a cohesive and visually appealing space without overwhelming the eye.
2. Choose a Dominant Metal
Select one metal to serve as the dominant element in your bathroom. This metal will be the primary focus, while the others play supporting roles. For example, if you opt for chrome as the dominant metal, use it for major fixtures like the faucet and shower head. Then, incorporate other metals, such as brass or matte black, as accents.
3. Balance Warm and Cool Metals
A balanced mix of warm and cool metals can create a sophisticated look. Warm metals include brass, copper, and gold, while cool metals include chrome, nickel, and stainless steel. Pairing these different tones can add visual interest and prevent the space from feeling too monochromatic.
4. Match Metal Finishes to the Overall Style
Consider the overall style of your bathroom when choosing metal finishes. Matte finishes often work well in modern or industrial designs, while polished finishes are suitable for traditional or classic spaces. Keep note that the finishes should complement your bathroom's aesthetic in order to create a unified look.
5. Consider the Room’s Existing Features
Take existing fixtures and fittings into account when mixing metals. If your bathroom already has chrome plumbing, for instance, incorporating other chrome elements can help tie the design together. This strategy ensures that the new metals blend seamlessly with what’s already present.
6. Coordinate with Other Elements
The mixed metals should blend well with the colors and textures of other elements in your bathroom, such as tiles, countertops, and cabinetry. For instance, if you have a white marble countertop, gold or brass accents can create a luxurious feel, while black or chrome might offer a more contemporary vibe.
7. Use Metals Strategically
Place metals where they will have the most impact. A statement mirror in brass can be the focal point of your bathroom, complemented by nickel hardware and stainless steel fixtures. This strategic placement ensures that the metals enhance the overall design without competing for attention.
8. Consistency in Placement
Consistency is key when mixing metals. Use the same metal for similar items to maintain a cohesive look. If you choose brass for your faucets, also use brass for your showerhead and towel bars. This approach prevents the design from feeling disjointed.
9. Consider Maintenance
Different metals require different levels of care. Ensure that the metals you choose are practical and maintainable for a bathroom environment. For example, chrome and stainless steel are known for their durability and ease of maintenance, making them excellent choices for high-moisture areas.
10. Personal Preference
Last but certainly not least: Ultimately, your bathroom should reflect your personal style and preferences. Choose metals that you love and that make you feel comfortable and happy in the space. Mixing metals is a creative process, and the final result should be a room that feels uniquely yours.
So, there you have it! Mixing metals in any space, especially your bathroom, can be a total game-changer. By keeping it simple, balancing tones, and coordinating with the rest of your decor, you can create a stunning, cohesive look.
