As the cooler weather rolls in, nothing says “cozy” like a fireplace that not only warms up your home but also adds a touch of elegance and personality to your space. Our latest project was all about transforming a standard builder-grade fireplace into a stunning focal point, and we’re excited to share the process with you.

The Before: Builder-Grade Shiplap Fireplace

When our clients reached out, their home was relatively new, but the fireplace lacked the charm and warmth they craved. Originally, the fireplace had a shiplap surround with a TV insert above and a flat-surface stone surround. While this setup is common in newer homes, it often feels more like a checklist item than a truly personalized feature. Our clients wanted to turn this design into something that reflected their style and elevated the space.

The Vision: Adding Character and Custom Touches

The vision was clear: our clients wanted a fireplace that would stand out but still feel cohesive with the rest of their home’s design. We worked with them to design a smooth Roman clay fireplace, a finish that exudes sophistication and subtle texture. Roman clay is a fantastic material for creating a soft, velvety surface with a bit of depth, perfect for adding a touch of elegance without overpowering the space.

To take things up a notch, we also added a bumped-out mantel, which gave the fireplace a more substantial and custom look. This new design creates a focal point, drawing the eye while offering space to display decor, especially during the fall and winter months.

The Build: How We Did It

Here’s how we transformed this fireplace step by step:

  1. Removing the Old Surround: First, we carefully demoed the shiplap and flat-surface stone surround. This allowed us to start with a clean slate, making way for the new design.

  2. Framing & Drywall: With the old materials removed, our team framed the new structure for the fireplace to support the bumped-out mantel and ensure the overall design was properly reinforced. Once the framing was complete, we added fresh drywall to create a smooth surface, setting the foundation for the Roman clay application. The framing also helped to make sure the mantel would be sturdy enough to hold decor or other items without any concern.

  3. Creating the Bumped-Out Mantel: To give the space even more dimension, we built a custom mantel that bumped out from the fireplace. This feature adds both visual interest and functionality, as it’s perfect for seasonal decor or simply as a statement piece.

  4. Prepping for Roman Clay: Next, the team smoothed the surface to get it ready for the Roman clay application. This material requires a lot of attention to detail, but the payoff is worth it. Roman clay is applied in thin layers, with each one creating that velvety, matte texture our clients were after.

  5. Finishing Touches: Finally, our trade partners painted the fireplace in a soft, neutral tone to complement the Roman clay finish. The result? A fireplace that feels timeless, elegant, and completely custom.

Fireplaces are often the heart of a room, especially as we head into the colder months. If your current fireplace isn’t quite hitting the mark, a remodel can make all the difference. Whether it’s adding a new material like Roman clay, updating the mantel, or simply giving it a fresh coat of paint, there are plenty of ways to make your fireplace feel like a statement.
